How to choose your MMA shorts? Complete guide

Why choosing the right MMA shorts is important

MMA shorts are not just any athletic shorts. They are technical gear that must withstand kicks, resist ground grabs, allow total freedom of movement, and dry quickly between rounds. Bad shorts can restrict your mobility, tear during a takedown, or simply hinder you during training. At Hustle Fightwear, we know that good shorts make a difference, and here's how to choose them well.

Material: Prioritize durability and lightness

The best MMA shorts are made from microfiber polyester or a polyester-elastane blend. These materials offer three key advantages: they are lightweight, tear-resistant, and dry quickly. Avoid cotton, which absorbs sweat, gets heavy, and takes hours to dry.

Some shorts incorporate stretch fabric panels in strategic areas (crotch, sides) to maximize range of motion without sacrificing durability elsewhere on the shorts. This detail makes a real difference when you're practicing high kicks or guard passes.

Cut: Between freedom and support

There are two main families of cuts for MMA shorts. The classic cut goes just above the knee with a wide opening at the thighs. It offers maximum freedom for kicks and standing movements. This is the preferred choice for striking and MMA in general.

The fitted cut, closer to grappling shorts or board shorts, hugs the thigh more. It reduces potential holds for the opponent on the ground and is better suited for grappling and no-gi. If you alternate between striking and ground work, look for a compromise with a mid-length cut and side slits. To learn more, check out our combat equipment collection.

Closure and waist support

This is an often overlooked but crucial point. MMA shorts typically use a velcro closure system combined with an internal drawstring. The velcro allows for quick and secure adjustment, while the drawstring prevents the shorts from opening during grappling exchanges.

Avoid shorts with a simple elastic waistband without additional velcro or drawstring: they risk slipping during a scramble or takedown. Also, check that the closure is flat and does not have exposed metal buckles or zippers, as most competition and gym regulations prohibit them to prevent injuries.

Size: Don't rely on your usual size

MMA short sizes vary greatly from brand to brand. The golden rule: measure your waist and consult the manufacturer's size guide before ordering. Shorts that are too big will constantly shift and can be grabbed by your opponent. Shorts that are too tight will restrict your hip movements and kicks. If in doubt between two sizes, choose the larger size and adjust with the drawstring. This is more comfortable and safer than shorts that are too tight. If you also practice no-gi BJJ, consider complementing your equipment with a good rashguard adapted to your discipline.

Details that make the difference

Beyond the main criteria, a few details distinguish good MMA shorts from average ones. Reinforced seams at stress points (crotch, slits) extend the life of the shorts. An antibacterial treatment of the fabric limits odors after intensive sessions. Side slits offer extra range for high kicks without compromising the shorts' support.

At Hustle Fightwear, our shorts are designed to meet all these requirements: technical materials, reinforced seams, velcro + drawstring closure, and an optimized cut for combat. Whether you are a beginner or a competitor, investing in quality shorts will make a real difference in your comfort and performance in training and competition.
