What equipment do I need to start MMA? Full list

Just signed up for your first MMA class? Congratulations—you're about to discover one of the most comprehensive and demanding disciplines in the world. But before you hit a bag or roll on the ground, you need the right gear. Unlike boxing or BJJ, MMA requires versatile equipment capable of handling both stand-up and ground practice. Here's the complete list of beginner MMA equipment, ranked by priority, with our advice from Hustle Fightwear to get you started without breaking the bank.

Essentials from your very first class

Some equipment is mandatory from the start, both for your safety and that of your partners. Your first planned purchase: a mouthguard. A thermoformable model costing around €20 will do perfectly to begin with. It protects your teeth and drastically reduces the risk of concussion from jaw impacts.

Next, a groin protector for men. This is non-negotiable as soon as there's sparring, even light. "Compression shorts with cup" models offer better support than a classic cup. For women, a pelvic protector may be advisable depending on the level of contact.

Finally, a rashguard and MMA shorts form the basis of your attire. The rashguard protects against mat burns and ground abrasions, while MMA shorts are cut to allow for kicks without hindering you. Discover our rashguard collection suitable for MMA practice.

MMA gloves: a technical choice

MMA gloves are at the heart of your equipment. Unlike boxing gloves, they are open-fingered to allow for grappling and submissions. For a beginner, aim for 6 to 8 oz gloves, with good knuckle padding and solid wrist support.

Be aware: many clubs also require more padded training gloves (grappling gloves 7-8 oz) for stand-up sparring. Check with your club before purchasing. For hitting the bag or focus mitts, 12 to 14 oz boxing gloves are recommended—they preserve your joints in the long term.

Shin guards: essential as soon as there's sparring

As soon as you start stand-up sparring, shin guards become mandatory. For a beginner, a foam model with a fabric cover (like "Muay Thai shinguards") will suffice. Leather models, which are more rigid, are better suited for advanced practitioners.

Make sure they fit well: a shin guard that twists during a kick is a guaranteed injury for both you and your partner. Models with double velcro straps and foot loops are the most stable.

Under the rashguard: compression shirt?

A frequent question among beginners: should you wear a compression shirt under your rashguard? The answer is generally no—a good rashguard already fulfills this function. But if you train in a cold gym or want to maximize muscle compression, you can layer. To delve deeper into the subject, read our article on the benefits of compression shirts for sports.

Accessories that make a difference

Beyond basic equipment, a few accessories greatly enhance your experience. A good pair of flip-flops is essential—you should never walk barefoot outside the mat for hygiene reasons (fungal infections, staph). An aerated sports bag (with a ventilated compartment for shoes and wet gear) will save you from the odor that breaks down classic bags in a few weeks.

Also, plan for two sets of handwraps (4.5 m) for striking sessions. And an insulated water bottle—hydration during exercise accounts for 50% of recovery.

Total budget to get started

Here's a realistic estimate to start MMA without breaking the bank: mouthguard €20, groin protector €25, rashguard + shorts €80-120, MMA gloves €40-60, shin guards €40-60, flip-flops + bag + accessories €50. Total budget: approximately €250 to €350 for a complete beginner setup.

Our advice: don't buy everything at once. Start with the mouthguard, groin protector, and attire (rashguard + shorts). Gloves and shin guards will come when you move on to sparring, after 1 to 2 months of practice.
